Identification & Behavior: ~15.5 cm (6.1 in). The Rufous-tailed Flatbill has olive mantle and head. It has a thin and poorly defined yellowish loral line and broken eye-ring. The bill is mostly black with yellow near the base of the mandible. The wing coverts are black with two broad rufous wing bars. The flight feathers are edged with rufous showing a rufous wing. The tail is rufous. The underparts are yellow broadly streaked with olive. It forages in the understory and midstory of Terra-Firme forest. It is similar to the closely related Dusky-tailed Flatbill but is distinguished by having rufous wings and rufous tail.

Status: The Rufous-tailed Flatbill is uncommon and widespread in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 700 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Pico-Plano de Cola Rufa.

Sub-species: Rufous-tailed Flatbill (Ramphotrigon ruficauda), (Spix), 1825.

Meaning of Name: Ramphotrigon: Gr. rhamphos= bill and trigonon= triangle. ruficauda: L. rufus= red, ruddy and cauda= tail.
