Identification & Behavior: ~29 cm (11.4 in). The Groove-billed Ani is all black with glossy fringes to the body and wing feathers. The iris is dark. The bill is thick with a hump in the culmen.  The tail is long. It favors semi-open habitats and forest edges where it is often found in family groups. It resembles the Smooth-billed Ani, but their ranges do not overlap.

Status: The Groove-billed Ani is common in the coastal lowlands and the Marañon Drainage, where it is known to range to elevations of up to 2700 m. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Ch.

Name in Spanish: Garrapatero de Pico Estriado.

Sub-species: Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris), Swainson, 1827.

Meaning of Name: Crotophaga: Gr. Kroton= tick and phagos, phagein= eat.  sulcirostris ??
