Identification & Behavior: ~16.5 cm (6.4 in). The Russet-bellied Spinetail has grayish head and mantle. It has a white eye-ring. The breast and rest of the underparts are russet. The wing is brownish with rufous primary coverts. The tail is rufous with a dusky central pair of feathers. It forages in the understory of Andean scrub and relict woodlands in pairs or family groups. Its plumage is unmistakable in its small range, but see Line-cheeked Spinetail and Baron’s Spinetail.
Status: Endemic. The Russet-bellied Spinetail is common but restricted to a small range on the west slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 2100-2900 m.
Name in Spanish: Cola-Espina de Vientre Rojizo.
Sub-species: Russet-bellied Spinetail (Synallaxis zimmeri), Koepcke, 1957.
Meaning of Name: Synallaxis: Gr. sunallaxeos, sunallaxis = exchange. zimmeri: In honor of Dr. John Todd Zimmer (1889-1957) US ornithologist, taxonomist.
