Identification & Behavior: ~22 cm (8.6 in) (warzewiczi), 31 cm (12.2 in) (kalinowskii). The Scrub Blackbird is solid black. The iris is dark. The bill is black. The tail is roundish. It forages in scrub and semi-open habitats. It is very similar to the Shiny Cowbird but is distinguished by a more stocky body, not as glossy purplish, no sexual dimorphism (male and females are black), and by being rather noisy.

Status: The Scrub Blackbird is fairly common in the lowlands west of the Andes where it is known to range up to 2500 m along the foothill of the Andes. The Scrub Blackbird also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Tordo de Matorral.

Sub-species: Scrub Blackbird (Dives warszewiczi warszewiczi) (Cabanis), 1861. W Ecuador (from S Esmeraldas and N Pichincha) S to NW Peru (Tumbes S to La Libertad).
(Dives warszewiczi kalinowskii), Berlepsch and Stolzmann, 1892. Coastal plain and foothills of W Peru from La Libertad S, extending inland in Cajamarca (upper R Marañón) and Huancavelica, to Ica.

Meaning of Name: Dives: Specific name Icterus dives Deppe, 1830. warszewiczi: In honor of Józef Warszewicz Ritter von Rawicz (1812-1866) Polish botanist, collector.
