Identification & Behavior: ~11.5 cm (4.5 in). The male Drab Seedeater is grayish above and pale gray below. It has a brownish bill. The female is brownish above and pale brown below. It has a dusky bill. Both sexes have two pale wing bars It forages in the shrubbery of forest edges, fallow agricultural fields, and hedges. It is similar to a female Chestnut-throated Seedeater but is distinguished by having a longer tail no dusky streaking or mottling on the upperparts and underparts. The also similar Dull-colored Grassquit does not have white wing bars and short-tailed and compact.

Status: The Drab Seedeater in uncommon mostly along the foothill of the western Andes at elevations ranging between 500-2500 m. However, in Lima and south of Lima, it is found in agricultural fields at sea level. The Drab seedeater also occurs in Ec.

Name in Spanish: Espiguero Simple.

Sub-species: Drab Seedeater (Sporophila simplex), (Taczanowski), 1874.

Meaning of Name: Sporophila: Gr. sporos= seed and philos= lover. simplex: L. simplex, simplicis= simple, plain.
