Identification & Behavior: ~92.7 cm (36.4 in). The Red and Green Macaw is all red with a broad green area on the wing. The bill is bicolored (pale culmen and black mandible). It has well defined black lines on the bare skin on the sides of the head. The flight feathers are blue. It is one of the four unmistakable large macaws.

Status: The Red and Green Macaw is widespread and uncommon in Amazonia. It generally ranges at elevations below 600 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Guacamayo Rojo y Verde.

Sub-species: Red-and-green Macaw (Ara chloropterus), G. R. Gray, 1859.

Meaning of Name: Ara: Tupi Brazilian Indian, name to designate several parrot species. chloropterus: Gr. khlöros= yellow, green and pteros, pteron= wing, winged.
