Identification & Behavior: ~22 cm (8.6 in). The Pied Lapwing is gray above and white below with a strongly patterned black and white breast and head. The legs are red. Unmistakable color pattern, but see Collared Plover.
Status: The Pied Lapwing is fairly common on sandy beaches along Amazonian Rivers where it is known to range up to 1000 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Avefría Pinta.
Sub-species: Pied Lapwing (Vanellus cayanus), Latham 1790.
Meaning of Name: Vanellus: L. diminutive of Vannus= Abib (popular name of a passerine bird from Portugal). cayanus: in reference to Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana.
