Identification & Behavior: ~15.5 cm (6.1 in). The male Chapman’s Antshrike has barred/spotted back with black and white. The breast is also barred with black and white and grades to brown or gray unmarked belly. It has a blackish crest the bird often erects. It has a dark iris. The female is mostly rufous with dusky streaks on the sides of the head and a rufous crown/crest. It forages in forest edges in humid and semi-deciduous forests, often in pairs. It is similar to the Barred Antshrike but occur on opposite slopes of the Andes and do not overlap.

Status: The Chapman’s Antshrike is uncommon to rare in the west slope of the northern Andes at elevations ranging between 600-2100 m. It also occurs in Ec.

Meaning of Name: Thamnophilus: Gr. Thamnos= bush and philos= lover. zarumae: Zaruma= a locality in El Oro, south-western Ecuador.
