Identification & Behavior: ~19.5 cm (7.6 in). The Cobalt-winged Parakeet is all green with blue primary flight feathers (cyanoptera). The birds in northeast Peru (gustavi) have green primary flight feathers and yellow shoulders. All forms show a bright orange chin. The bill is brownish. The tail is pointy. It is similar to the Tui Parakeet but is distinguished by lacking the bright yellow forehead and brown bill (Tui Parakeet has a dusky brown bill).

Status: The Cobalt-winged Parakeet is common and widespread in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 1350 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Perico de Ala Cobalto.

Sub-species: Cobalt-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris cyanoptera cyanoptera), Pelzeln, 1870.  E & SE Colombia to E Ecuador, E Peru, NW Bolivia and WC Brazil.
(B. c. gustavi), Berlepsch, 1889. Upper Huallaga Valley, in N Peru.

Meaning of Name: Brotogeris: Gr. Brotogërus= with a human voice. cyanoptera: Gr. kuanos= dark blue, deep blue and pteron= wing, winged.
