Identification & Behavior: ~15 cm (6 in). The Planalto Hermit is mainly dull brownish green above with a rufous rump. It has a reduced black mask through the eye, bordered above and below with whitish-buff stripes. The underparts are buff in color. The bill is long, decurved, with a red lower mandible. The tail is dusky, tapered, and tipped white. The central pair of tail feathers are longer than the rest. It is similar to the Great-billed Hermit, but is distinguished by rufous underparts, being smaller and slender, and by having a rufous rump.

Status: The Planalto Hermit is common, but geographically restricted to the lower Mayo and part of the Huallaga Valleys in the foothills of the northeast Andes. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Ermitaño del Planalto.

Sub-species: Planalto Hermit (Phaethornis pretrei), Lesson and DeLattre 1839.

Meaning of Name: Phaethornis: Gr. Phao= sun sunshine, and Ornis= bird. pretrei: in honor of the Swiss artist, painter of birds to the Natural History Museum in Paris, Jean Gabriel Prêtre (1800-1840).
