Identification & Behavior: ~10.5 cm (4.1 in). The male Round-tailed Manakin is all black with a red head and bushy mane on the nape. The thighs are yellow. It has a white iris and a yellow bill. The female is all green with a brown iris and yellowish bill, throat, center of the belly, and undertail coverts. Both sexes have a rounded tail. It forages in the understory of Terra Firme forest. It is very similar to the Red-headed Manakin but the male is distinguished by having a red mane on the nape, white iris, round tail, and yellow thighs. The female has a round tail, but other than that, it may be difficult to separate in the field.

Status: The Round-tailed Manakin is uncommon and widespread in the southern half of the Peruvian Amazon where it is known to range up to 1500 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Saltarín de Cola Redonda.

Sub-species: Round-tailed Manakin (Ceratopipra chloromeros), Tschudi, 1844.

Meaning of Name: Ceratopipra: Gr. keras, keratos= horn and pipra= small bird, never properly identified.. chloromeros: Gr. khloros= yellow and meros= thigh, leg.
