Identification & Behavior: ~14 cm (5.5 in). The Buff-bellied Tanager is light bluish-gray above with a rufous crown and nape. The face and underparts are buffy in color. The juvenile is a dull version of the adult with an olive forehead and crown. It forages in second growth, scrub, and shrubbery within its range. It is similar to the Rufous-chested Tanager but is distinguished by uniform buff underparts, and by favoring in drier habitats at lower elevations.
Status: The Buff-bellied Tanager is uncommon in the Marañon Drainage at elevations ranging between 500-2000 m. It also occurs in Ec.

Sub-species: Buff-bellied Tanager (Thlypopsis inornata), (Taczanowski), 1879.
Meaning of Name: Thlypopsis: Gr. Thlupis= unknown small bird, perhaps a finch or a warbler, and opsis= appearance. inornata: L. in= not, inornatus= plain, unadorned.
