Identification & Behavior: ~23 cm (9 in). The Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager has a golden mantle and underparts.  It has a black hood with a blue crown, and black wings and tail. It forages in humid montane and elfin forest in family groups and also along with mixed species flocks. The plumage is unmistakable but see Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager.

Status: Endemic. The Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager is uncommon and restricted to a narrow altitudinal band on the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 3000-3600 m.

Name in Spanish: Tangara-de-Montaña de Dorso Dorado.

Sub-species: Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager ( Cnemothraupis aureodorsalis) (Blake and Hocking), 1974

Meaning of Name: Cnemathraupis: Gr. Knemos= ridge, shoulder and thraupis= unknown small bird, perhaps some sort of finch. In ornithology thraupis signifies tanager. aureodorsalis: L. aureus, aurum= golden, gold and dorsalis= of the back, dorsal.
