Identification & Behavior: ~48 cm (19 in). The Gray Petrel has gray-brown upperparts. The throat and rest of the underparts are whitish. The underwing is dark and contrasts with the whitish breast and belly. The bill is yellowish. It is more similar to a Pink-footed Shearwater but is distinguished by dark underwing that contrasts with the whitish breast and belly.

Status: The status of the Gray Petrel is based on sight records. Further confirmation is required. It also occurs in Br and Ch.

Name in Spanish: Petrel Gris.

Sub-species: Gray Petrel (Procellaria cinerea), J. F. Gmelin, 1789.

Meaning of Name: Procellaria: Mod. L. procella= storm, gale, procellarius= of the storm. cinerea: L. cinis, cineris= ashes. Cinereus= ash-grey, ash-colored.
