Identification & Behavior: ~13.5 cm (5.2 in). The Chilean Swallow has glossy blue upperparts with a white rump. The underparts are white. The tertials and secondary flight feathers show some white fringing near the tips. The tail is notched. It forages over open areas and a variety of other habitat types. It is similar to the White-rumped Swallow but does not have a white loral line.
Status: The Chilean Swallow is a rare Austral visitor to southwest Peru where it is known only from a handful of sightings. It also occurs in Br, Bo, and Ch.

Sub-species: Chilean Swallow (Tachycineta meyeni), (Cabanis), 1850.
Meaning of Name: Tachycineta: Gr. takhukinetos= moving quickly, fast. meyeni: In honor of Prof. Franz Julius Ferdinand Meyen (1804-1840) Prussian surgeon, botanist, collector.
