Identification & Behavior: ~23 cm (9 in). The Violaceous Quail-Dove has brown back and tail. The top of the head and sides and back of the neck are violaceous. The iris is pale brown. The orbital skin is red. The bill is reddish. The breast is pinkish and grades to whitish in the lower belly. The female is a dull version of the male. It forages mostly on the ground. It may resemble a Gray-fronted Dove, but is distinguished by the color contrast between the underparts and the back, bill color, and being paler overall.
Status: The Violaceous Quail-Dove is rare and poorly known in a few locations in Amazonia. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Paloma-Perdiz Violácea.
Sub-species: Violaceous Quail-Dove (Geotrygon violacea violacea), Temminck 1809.
