Identification & Behavior: ~14.5 cm (5.7 in). The Rufous-tailed Tyrant has gray upperparts. The wing coverts are dusky with two brown wing bars. The breast is gray and grades to rufous toward the belly. The iris is red. The tail feathers have rufous webbing. It forages in forest edges and second growth. It is similar to a female White-winged Black-Tyrant but is distinguished by a red iris, a rufous belly, and a buffy-rufous rump.
Status: The Rufous-tailed Tyrant is uncommon in montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 900-2300 m. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Viudita de Cola Rufa.
Sub-species: Rufous-tailed Tyrant (Knipolegus poecilurus peruanus), (Berlepsch and Stolzmann), 1896.
Meaning of Name: Knipolegus: Gr. knips, knipos= insect and lego= to pick. poecilurus: Gr. poikilia= diversity and oura= tail.
