Identification & Behavior: ~42 cm (16.5 in). The Many-banded Aracari has black head and upperparts with greenish bare skin around a pale eye.  The underparts are yellow with two distinctive bands across the breast and belly.  The lower mandible is black with the upper mandible mostly orange-yellow. It is similar to Chestnut-eared Aracari but is distinguished by having two black bands across the breast and belly.

Status: The Many-banded Aracari is rare to uncommon in the forest canopy of Amazonia where it is found only on the north side of the Amazon and lower Marañon Rivers. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Br.

Name in Spanish: Arasari Multibandeado.

Sub-species: Many-banded Araçari (Pteroglossus pluricinctus). Gould 1835.

Meaning of Name: Pteroglossus: Gr. pteros= feather, wing and glossa= tongue (feather-like tongue). pluricinctus: L. pluri=many and cinctus, cingere= list, band around.
