Identification & Behavior: ~17 cm (6.6 in). The Carmiol’s Tanager (or Olive Tanager), is olive above and yellow olive below. Both sexes have similar plumages. The bill is thick and black. Its relatively plain plumage may resemble those of female tanager but is distinguished by a stocky body, yellowish throat and underparts, and thick black bill. See, female White-winged-Shrike Tanager and Gray-headed Tanager.

Status: The Carmiol’s Tanager is fairly common but local in humid montane forests on the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 500-1400 m. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Tangara Aceitunada.

Sub-species: Carmiol’s Tanager (Chlorothraupis carmioli frenata), Berlepsch, 1907.

Meaning of Name: Chlorothraupis: Gr. Khloros= green and thraupis= unknown small bird, perhaps some sort of finch. carmioli: Franz Carmiol (born Franz Grasneck) (fl. 1868) German immigrant, son of Julian Carmiol, resident and collector in Costa Rica.
