Identification & Behavior: ~14.5 cm (6 in). The Correndera Pipit has brownish upperparts streaked and mottled with dusky. It has distinctive pale stripes on the mantle. It has a rudimentary pale malar stripe. The breast, sides of the belly, and flanks are pale tawny with bold black streaks. The belly is whitish. The tail is brownish with white outer tail feathers. The legs are pink. It forages on open areas with short grass. It is very similar to the Short-billed Pipit but is distinguished by bolder streaks on the breast and sides of the underparts and conspicuous pale stripes on the back (mantle). Status: The Correndera Pipit is fairly common but local in open grassland in the high Andes at elevations ranging between 3800-4600 m. It also occurs in Br, Bo, and Ch.

Name in Spanish: Cachirla Correndera.

Sub-species: Correndera Pipit (Anthus correndera calcaratus), Taczanowski, 1875.

Meaning of Name: Anthus: Gr. Myth. Anthos= small, brightly colored bird mentioned by Aristotle. correndera: Local Aragonese name Correndera for the Meadow Pipit, given to the Correndera Pipit by de Azara 1802-1805.
