Identification & Behavior: ~14.5 cm (6 in). The male Cordillera Azul Antbird has a rufous mantle with a brown top of the head and nape. The wing coverts are black with light cream-colored wing bars. All the underparts, sides of the head, and neck are black. It has a bluish bare skin around the eyes and an extended gray eyebrow. The tail is gray-brown. The bill is bluish with a dusky culmen. The female is a dull version of the male but differs in having rufous underparts and a whitish throat.  The iris in both sexes is dark. It forages near and on the ground. There appear not to be a bird with similar behavior and plumage pattern at this bird’s limited known range.

Status: Endemic. Based on the literature and reports, the bird appears to be uncommon. Territorial pairs seem generally quite but respond to playback of their vocalizations. Flor de Cafe, also known as Plataforma, is located at an elevation of approximately 1,600 m in San Martin.

Meaning of Name: Myrmoderus: Gr. Murmos= ant; derō= to thrash, to cudgel. eowilsoni: In honor of renowned sociobiologist and myrmecologist Edward Osborne Wilson, usually cited as E.O. Wilson.
