Identification & Behavior: ~15.5 cm (6.1 in). The male Lined Antshrike is heavily barred throughout with black and white. The black barring is broad and appears blackish from a distance. It has a blackish crest the bird often erects. The female has barred underparts and sides of the head and bright rufous back and crown. Both sexes have a brown or reddish iris. It forages in forest edges and second growth. It is similar to the Barred Antshrike but is distinguished by a darker coloration (male), different plumage in the female, brown iris, and by ranging at higher elevations. The female Chestnut-backed Antshrike is also very similar but the range of these two antshrikes does not overlap.

Status: The Lined Antshrike is uncommon in humid montane forests of the east slope of the Andes in northern Peru at elevations ranging between 700-1700 m. Locally, it ranges to lower elevations. The Lined Antshrike also occurs in Co and Ec.

Meaning of Name: Thamnophilus: Gr. Thamnos= bush and philos= lover. tenuepunctatus: L. tenuis, tenue= weak, sligh and punctatus= spotted.
