Identification & Behavior: ~34 cm (13.4 in). The Red-Fan Parrot has green upperparts. The underparts and back of the neck are purple with blue scaling. The head is dusky with fine white streaking. The bill is dusky. The tail is long and square. The Red Fan Parrot is unmistakable in its range.
Status: The Red-Fan Parrot is rare in the only two locations along the Yavari and Pastaza Rivers this parrot is known to occur in Peru. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Br.
Name in Spanish: Loro de Abanico.
Sub-species: Red-Fan Parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus accipitrinus), Linnaeus, 1758.
Meaning of Name: Deroptyus: Gr. dere= neck and ptuon, ptyus= ventilated, bristling in the wind. accipitrinus: L. resembles a hawk.
