Identification & Behavior: ~14 cm (5.5 in). The male Orange-crowned Manakin has olive-gray upperparts with a prominent orange crown. The throat is white. The underparts are rufous. The female is a very dull version of the male but does not have orange on the crown. It forages in the mid and understory of floodplain forests associated with blackwater rivers. The very similar Flame-crowned Manakin is known in Peru only for the Pampas de Heath in extreme Southeatern Peru.

Status: The Orange-crowned Manakin is uncommon mostly on the north side of the Amazon River, but also in a few locations on the south side of the Amazon River. It also occurs in Ec and Br.

Name in Spanish: Saltarín de Corona Naranja.

Sub-species: Orange-crowned Manakin (Heterocercus aurantiivertex), P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1880.

Meaning of Name: Heterocercus: Gr. heteros= different and kerkos= tail. aurantiivertex: L. aurantius= orange-coloured, aurantia orange and vertex, verticis= crown of the head.
