Identification & Behavior: ~21.5 cm (8.4 in). The Gray Monjita is mostly gray. The wing is black with white edging on the wing coverts, and a large white speculum noticeable when the bird is in flight. The tail is black with a pale terminal band. The face and throat are patterned with gray and white. The iris is bright red. It forages in open areas interspersed with shrubs, hedgerows, and savannah habitat. The patterned plumage of the Gray Monjita is unique but see the Boreal migrant Eastern Kingbird.

Status: The Gray Monjita is restricted to the savannah habitat of Pampas del Heath in extreme southeast Peru. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Monjita Gris.

Sub-species: Gray Monjita (Xolmis cinereus pepoaza), (Vieillot), 1823.

Meaning of Name: Xolmis: Word of unknown origin. cinereus: L. cinis, cineris= ashes, and cinereus= ash-grey, ash-colored.
