Identification & Behavior: ~16 cm (6.2 in). The male Uniform Antshrike is uniformly gray without any markings. The female is uniformly rufous with gray sides of the head. Both sexes have a light gray iris. It forages in dense understory in humid montane forest. The unmarked gray male is unmistakable in its range. The female is similar to a female Variable Antshrike and Rufous-capped Antshrike but is distinguished by a light gray iris and uniform rufous-brown plumage.

Status: The Uniform Antshrike is uncommon in humid montane forests of the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 1250-2300 m. It also occurs in Co and Ec.

Name in Spanish: Batará Unicolor.

Sub-species: Uniform Antshrike (Thamnophilus unicolor grandior), Hellmayr, 1924. Colombia (locally on all Andean slopes) and E slope in Ecuador and N Peru (S to N San Martín).

Meaning of Name: Thamnophilus: Gr. Thamnos= bush and philos= lover. unicolor: L. uni= single and color, coloris= color, unicolor= plain, uniform, of one color.
