Identification & Behavior: ~20.5 cm (8 in). The Grayish Saltator is overall gray (darker on the upperparts) with a rusty lower belly and vent areas. It has a pale and short superciliary and a black malar stripe. The throat is white. The bill is thick and blackish. Both sexes are similar. It is similar to the Buff-throated Saltator but is distinguished by having gray upperparts, white throat, and by being associated with second growth habitats and forest edges.
Status: The Grayish Saltator is fairly common and widespread in second growth and forest edges of Amazonian forests. It is known to range up to 1200 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Saltador Grisáceo.
Sub-species: Grayish Saltator (Saltator coerulescens azarae), d’Orbigny, 1839.
Meaning of Name: Saltator: L. saltator, saltatoris dancer, saltare= to dance. coerulescens: L. caerulescens, caerulescentis= bluish.
