Status: Endemic. The Tumbes Hummingbird is fairly common in arid scrub and edges of deciduous forest in the lowlands of northwest Peru. It is known to range at elevations below 800 m along the northwest foothill of the Andes.

Sub-species: Tumbes Hummingbird (Thaumasios baeri), Simon, 1901.
Meaning of Name: Thaumasius: Gr. Thaumasios= marvellous, wonderful. baeri: In honor of Gustave Adolphe Baer (1839-1918) French natural history dealer, collector in Peru, Chile and Brazil.
Formerly known as Leucipus baeri (2019).
