Blackburnian Warbler (Setophaga fusca)

Identification & Behavior: ~12.6 cm (5 in). The male Blackburnian Warbler has a patterned head and breast with bright orange and black. The rest of the upperparts are black and white. The plumage of the female has a similar pattern but gray and yellowish instead of black and orange.

Status: The Blackburnian Warbler is a Boreal migrant uncommon in humid forest on the east slope of the Andes at elevations ranging between 1000 – 3000. It also occurs in the humid montane forest on the west slope of the Andes in Piura and Cajamarca. It is expected in Peru during the months of September through April. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Reinita de Garganta Naranja.

Sub-species: Blackburnian Warbler (Setophaga fusca), Statius Müller, 1776.

Meaning of Name: Setophaga: Gr. ses, setos= moth and phagos, phagein= eating, to eat. fusca: L. fuscus dusky= black, brown.
