Black-crested Warbler (Basileuterus nigrocristata)

Identification & Behavior: ~13.6 cm (5.3 in). The Black-crested Warbler is yellowish-olive above and yellow below. It has yellow superciliary and black from the base of the bill through the crown. It is distinguished from other similar Basileuterus warblers by having black on the forehead and crown. The similar Citrine Warbler ranges at lower elevations in areas where the range of these two warblers comes close together.

Status: The Black-crested Warbler is fairly common in the understory and bamboo thickets in humid montane forests of the east and west slopes of the northern Andes. It generally occurs at elevations ranging between 1800-3300 m. The Black-crested Warbler also occurs in Co and Ec.

Meaning of Name: Myiothlypis: Gr. Muias= fly and thlupis= unidentified small bird, perhaps some sort of finch or warbler. nigrocristata: L. niger= black and cristatus,crista= crested, crest.
