Identification & Behavior: ~23 cm (9 in) (male), ~ 19 cm (7.4 in) (female). The Rufous Twistwing is uniformly rufous. The wing coverts, flight and tail feathers are dusky fringed with rufous. It has a bicolored bill, a bushy crest, and red iris. The female is smaller than the male. It forages exclusively in stands of Guadua bamboo. It is similar to the Brownish Twistwing but is more rufous, larger, and their ranges are not known to overlap. Also, see Varzea Schiffornis.

Status: The Rufous Twistwing is rare and restricted almost entirely to patches of Guadua bamboo in southeast Peru mostly in Madre De Dios. It also occurs in Br and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Alitorcido Rufo.

Sub-species: Rufous Twistwing (Cnipodectes superrufus), Lane, Servat, Valqui and Lambert, 2007.

Meaning of Name: Cnipodectes: Gr. knips, knipos= insect, woodworm and dektes, dakno= biter, to bite. superrufus: L. super= above and rufus= rufous; very rufous.
