Identification & Behavior: ~29 cm (11.4 in). The Plumbeous Rail has olive-brown upperparts and backside of the neck. The head, neck, and underparts are gray.  The legs are red and the bill is greenish with a distinctive red on the base of the lower mandible and blue on the upper mandible.  It is very similar to Blackish Rail, but their ranges do not overlap.

Status: The Plumbeous Rail is common in a variety of habitat near water along the western coastal lowlands and western foothill of the Andes. It is also common in Andean wetlands reaching elevations of up to 4,400 m. It also occurs in Ec, Br, Bo, and Ch.

Name in Spanish: Rascón Plomizo.

Sub-species: Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus simonsi) C. Chubb, 1917. Also P. s. tschudii C. Chubb, 1919.

Meaning of Name: Pardirallus: Gr. pardos= leopard; and rallus= in reference to the genus Rallus. sanguinolentus: L. sanguinolentus, sanguis, sanguinis= bloody, blood, blood.
