Identification & Behavior: ~18.5 cm (7.3 in). The Rufous-necked Puffbird is all brown and rufous with the upperparts darker than the underparts. They have a gray cap, rufous neck and a white crescent on the chest. Its range overlaps with other puffbirds, but it is the only one without any bars, streaks, or spots. The bill is all dark. Status: The Rufous-necked Puffbird is rare to uncommon in the understory of varzea forests. It can also be found in Terra Firme forest, but it is rarer in the latter. It also occurs in Br and Bo.
Name in Spanish: Buco de Cuello Rufo.
Sub-species: Rufous-necked Puffbird (Malacoptila rufa rufa) Spix, 1824.
Meaning of Name: Malacoptila: Gr. malakos= soft and ptilon= plumage, feather. rufa: L. rufus, rufous= brown, red, reddish brown.
