Identification & Behavior: ~16.5 cm (6.5 in). The Bay Antpitta is chestnut with a dusky cap and pale center of the belly. The bill is thick, broad at the base, and pale bluish. It is very similar to Chestnut Antpitta, and Rufous Antpitta, but is distinguished by larger size, dusky cap, thick pale bluish bill, and voice. Rufous Antpitta and Chestnut Antpitta have smaller and solid black bills. Rufous Antpitta also ranges at higher elevations.
Status: Endemic. The Bay Antpitta is fairly common in its restricted geographic and altitudinal range in Central Peru. It is generally known at elevations between 1800 – 3000 m.

Sub-species: Bay Antpitta (Grallaria capitalis) Chapman, 1926.
Meaning of Name: Grallaria: L. grallarius, grallae= one walking on stilts. capitalis: L. caput= of the head.
