Lafrenaye’s Piculet (Picumnus lafresnayi)

Identification & Behavior: ~9 cm (3.5 in). The Lafresnaye’s Piculet has dusky-green faintly barred with dusky upperparts. The underparts are yellowish boldly and evenly barred. Both sexes have dusky top of the head with white spots, but only males have golden foreheads. It is similar to Bar-breasted Piculet and to a lesser extent to Fine-barred Piculet but is distinguished by having evenly barred underparts.

Status: The Lafresnaye’s Piculet occurs on the north side of the Amazon/Marañon, and west side of the Ucayali Rivers. It favors the forest canopy of Amazonian forests. It is known to range up to 1200 m along the foothill of the Andes. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Br.

Name in Spanish: Carpinterito de Lafresnaye.

Meaning of Name: Picumnus: Fr. Picumne, Piculet= little woodpecker. lafresnayi= after the French ornithologist Noël Frédéric Armand André Baron Lafresnaye.
